Its projects focus on addressing major environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, land degradation, and pollution, while also enhancing local livelihoods. These initiatives are implemented in collaboration with national institutions, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and international partners like the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank. Through this support, Liberia has strengthened its capacity to manage environmental programs and align them with national development priorities, particularly in sustainable forest management, climate-smart agriculture, and environmental governance.

Current and recent GEF-supported projects in Liberia emphasize integrated landscape management, climate adaptation, and pollution control. For instance, initiatives under the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) program promote forest conservation alongside sustainable agricultural practices that benefit local communities. Additional efforts include coastal resilience projects to protect vulnerable populations from sea-level rise, as well as programs to reduce mercury use in artisanal gold mining to improve environmental and public health outcomes. At the grassroots level, the GEF Small Grants Programme continues to support community-based organizations in implementing local environmental solutions.
